Belonging

What is that one memory that you remember so starkly from your childhood? Isn’t there any such object that reminds you of some memory years back that you still treasure? Don’t you go back in time and reminisce when you look at something? It could be how excited your whole family gets when you buy your first crate of mangoes for that year or all the photographs you click with your friends to treasure that moment you are in.

Since I could remember or from what I have been told, thathi (my grandmother) took care of me, bathed me, fed me, and put me to sleep while Amma went to work. As a baby, I would roll up thathi’s sari into a ball and sleep at night. Even after she moved out, thathi would still send her old sari pieces so I could sleep at night. This object instills such a strong memory and reminds me of my relationship and my childhood. The project includes making one long swatch with a simplified sari pattern that reminds me of my grandmother. The aim of the project is to remind the audience of a memory or story in their life connected to an object when they were young and teach kids the value of family and relationships.
